3 Books I’m Reading at Any Given Time
Despite being a full-time mom to two toddlers, I try really hard to make time to read every single day. For many people, it’s hard enough to keep up with one book at a time. And there’s nothing wrong with that. If you can tackle one book at a time and stay focused and enjoy the process, you should do that. But I’m a little different . . .
I have reading moods. Can anyone else relate? There are times of the day when I crave a certain type of book. And that, my friends, is why I’m typically reading about three books at time. I don’t always read each book each day, but I’m rotating between them throughout my week. Does that make sense? So, in one day, I might only read two of my three books, but I’ll likely finish the three around the same time.
At any given time, I typically have three books sitting on an end table in my living room (my favorite place to read):
A faith-based book: Most mornings, I’m up bright and early with my husband. He gets a head start on work while I sit down for some quiet reading time before the kids get up. I typically read my Bible first (right now, I’m reading through the Bible with my church) and once that’s done, I like to pick up a faith-based book and read one to two chapters before I start breakfast. There’s something about the early morning hours that make me crave faith content. I’m just not interested in fiction or personal growth then—what I’m looking for is spiritual growth. Right now, that book is Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age by Rosaria Butterfield.
A novel: I’m a novelist, so of course I’m always reading a novel! Some writers don’t like to read novels when they’re writing a novel, but I do! In fact, I need to. I feel like it helps me step outside of my own story and gleen inspiration from another fellow writer. It relaxes my brain, teaches me a lot about my craft, and it’s just plain fun. For these reasons, you can typically find me reading a novel after I’ve put the kids down to bed and it’s time to relax on the couch. Right now, that book is In Search of a Prince by Toni Shiloh.
A non-fiction book on personal/career growth: I’ve always been a non-fiction junkie. There have been years in my life where I only read non-fiction (the reverse is true, too). I love digging into a biography, memoir, or other book that helps me understand something in a fresh, new way. I’ve learned so much from books on personal growth—they’re the cheapest degree you can get! I’m most interested in a non-fiction book around lunch time when I have a little down time (because my toddlers are napping) but am still thinking about my “workday”/career as a writer. Right now, that book is The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday.
Anyone else out there also enjoy rotating through several books at a time?! Let me know in the comments below!
